Ako Hiko Education Trust commenced in late February 2014.
We work to support education achievement in low decile schools that are part of the Ako Hiko Cluster. These schools are currently: Hay Park, May Road, Owairaka, New Windsor, Waikowhai and Wesley Primary schools and Wesley Intermediate School. We welcome interest from other schools.
Through our work with technology in the classroom we aim to accelerate achievement for our students. We have committed and outstanding leaders, teachers, and students who love to share their journey as they Learn, Create, Share in visible online spaces.
Our Activities
Research
Our cluster schools are participating in a research project in partnership with Manaiakalani Outreach and Auckland University Woolf Fisher Research Centre. The research is designed to tell us if the programme increases student achievement and engagement, and to date it shows that it is.
Research already released by Manaiakalani shows significant improvement in education outcomes, and you can learn more here.
Access to Devices
Each year the trust makes available 200-300 Acer Chromebook Bundles to families in our schools. These are allocated to digital classes in the schools. Families are able to buy the Bundles up-front or via a Hire Purchase style credit contract. This enables families to provide an excellent learning tool to their children at a reasonable cost per week or month. There are a range of contracts available.
Professional Learning Development for Teachers
It would not be of much use to provide devices without also supporting our teachers in ensuring their teaching makes the most of the devices. With that in mind we continue to invest heavily in teacher and programme development. This ranges from supporting teachers new to 1:1 digital classrooms, sharing of learning, development of new teaching resources and professional development opportunities.
Our Contracts
The trust provides Chromebook Bundles to families of students enrolled in a digital learning classroom at one of the Ako Hiko Cluster Schools.
These are supplied via a Credit Sale Agreement. We offer a range of contracts depending on how quickly the family wishes to pay for the device and how long the student still has remaining at a cluster school. No interest or fees are payable. Families also must attend an internet safety programme and sign the Ako Hiko Kawa of Care.
Included in the total cost of the device is:
Acer 11’ Chromebook and charger
3 Year Manufacturers Warranty
Carry case
Device Care Package for accidental damage or loss for 3 years
